Llanboidy 5 SDUC 2

On a windy, cold afternoon at Cae Dandre, Llanboidy got off to a perfect start. Despite the condition of the pitch, the Dandre boys played some great football, and after 5 minutes of playtime the home side were up by two goals.

The opening goal came after only 2 minutes and 46 seconds. Right-winger Steven Plumb turned his man on the edge of the box and ran across the goal before smashing the ball to the top right corner with his left foot from ten yards out. The second goal came only minutes later following good work by Llan’s solid midfield partners, Evans and Makepeace, which led to left-winger Jamie Morris presenting Steven Plumb with a stunning cross. Once again Plumb made no mistake in front of goal, shooting past the keeper this time with his right foot.

The third goal and arguably the goal of the match came after 15 minutes of play. The move started with centre back Julian Williams’s well-won header in the air from a SDUC goal kick, heading the ball perfectly into the path of unmarked right back Gruff Ifan. Ifan spotted Clive Jones wandering unmarked on the edge of the SDUC box after striker Luke Burrows’ perfectly timed run, ripped open a gap in the defence. Ifan’s powerful pin point long ball from Llan’s own half met Jones’ right foot just inside the box, and the ball was fired into the back of the net with a Clive Jones trademark! A great move by Llanboidy!

However, enjoying more possession after 20 minutes of play, SDUC showed character and played good football at times, forcing two good saves by Llan’s Captain in the goal. The fourth goal came after poor defending by Llanboidy, leading to the SDUC lone striker to be brought down in the box. The striker made no mistake with the spot kick, placing the ball coolly into the bottom left corner. SDUC were back in the game.

Minutes before the interval Plumb got his 17th goal of the season and his 2nd hattrick of the season, after heading home another cross into the back of the net making it 4-1 to the home side at half time. A Llanboidy player claimed that racial abuse were thrown at him by a certain SDUC player at half time after a penalty appeal by Llanboidy infuriated one of the SDUC players minutes earlier. The referee indicated after the game that he was unable to comment on the matter, as he did not hear the acclaimed comments.

There was nothing much to the 2nd half, Llanboidy not playing with the edge and the creativity they showed in the first half, handing possession to the opposition far to easy and making some crucial defending errors. The fact that we had to wait until the final 10 minutes before the ball once again found the back of the net proved that Llanboidy had slowly ran out of ideas, and that the Students were obviously benefiting from their tactical, but costly revision work in the first half.

Luke Burrows’ half volley attempt at 80 minutes was denied by the cross bar. But none the less, hattrick hero Steven Plumb was on hand once again to pounce on the loose ball and tap it past the keeper to bring his tally for the now breezy, sunny afternoon to four goals.

The final score was 5 – 2 to Llanboidy, SDUC getting their second and final goal of the match after a controversial decision made by the referee in the dying minutes, handing SDUC with a penalty after a sloppy challenge by Ifan. However, the penalty was superbly taken by the SDUC striker, he sent the ball to the bottom right corner and the goalkeeper completely to the opposite direction.

Both teams meet again on Cae Dandre this Saturday in the Quarter Final of the South Cards Cup, SDUC looking to take the match to penalties after benefiting from good practise during last Saturday’s match! This Cup looks set to be Llan’s only hope of a trophy this season, as they are positioned in 3rd place in Cardiganshire League’s 2nd Division, trailing 4 points behind 2nd place Dewi Stars - Stars also boasting a game in-hand. But rest a sure, this Saturday’s final whistle could result a completely different outcome if the Dandre lads show the Students the same respect given to them in last week’s second half!

Saturday’s match will kick off at 3 pm. Away supporters are strictly advised by ‘The Maesgwynne Voluntary Community Police Officers’ to travel by bus only, and will arrive at Cae Dandre five minutes before kick off, led by Julian Williams in his striking blue Corsa. (Match report by Gruff Ifan)

New Quay res 2 Llanboidy 5

After scoring 10 against the sea siders 3 weeks ago in the league a confident Llanboidy side were made to work hard by a solid New Quay team looking for revenge.

Despite the visitors dominating possession it was the hosts who created the early chances but were foiled by the impressive central partnership of Harries and Williams. It was from a New Quay attack that the visitors took the lead, through a speedy counter attack. Dafydd Makepeace picked the ball up on the edge of his own area before producing a ‘peach’ of a pass to pick out veteran front man Clive Jones to chip the keeper to open the scoring. This was soon increased by young front man Luke Davies who managed to beat 2 defenders before calmly slotting in.

This quick fire double seemed to spark the hosts into life and they managed to pull a goal back with a close effort despite the good work of Lewis in the Boidy goal. 2:1 at the interval.

After a few close efforts by winger Jamie Morris and midfield hard man Liam Evans the visitors were first to open the scoring in the second half. Following some slick passing between the front men Clive Jones added his second of the match by coolly slotting home after being put through by strike partner Luke Davies. It was Dafydd Makepeace’s turn to score next with a trademark free-kick from the edge of the area. ‘Davs’ scoring his 3rd free kick in a row. This again seemed to rattle the hosts into action and it was them who scored the 6th goal of the match. Lewis in the Boidy goal miss-timing a run off his line to leave an empty goal for the Quay front man to head into. This goal could have been added to by the hosts in the final minutes but for some dogged defending especially by man of the match Hefin Harries. The 7th and final goal was scored by winger Steve Plumb who fired past the keeper from the edge of the area following good work in midfield.

So it is the Cae Dandre outfit who progress to the next round hoping for a generous draw.

Llanboidy 3 Llandybydder Reserves 1

After last week’s disapointing defeat to Aberporth, Llan got back to winning ways against mid-table Llanybydder, running out convincing winners.

The home side made the most of the early running, cheered on by a good sized crowd and got the first break when a left wing cross from the lively Jamie Morris was handled by a defender in the box. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Dafydd Makepeace made no mistake with the penalty.

Llan’s joy was short lived however when some sloppy defending allowed the visitors to bundle home the equaliser at the far post with their first real opportunity.

This spurred the Cae Dande boys on and the visting keeper had to make smart saves from a Griff Ifan free kick and a Luke Davies effort. Despite the chances it remained 1-1 at the break.

The second half saw Llan go searching for the winner with the visitors also threatening from set pieces. Sub Clive Jones entered the fray as an additional striker and almost immediately Llan grabbed the lead when man of the match Luke Davies slotted home at the far post, much to the relief of the home side.

Llan made the game safe with 10 minutes left when Jones floated a perfect cross onto the head of winger Steve Plumb who scored for 3-1.

Llanybydder pressed to salvage something but the home side’s rearguard held firm with defenders Julian Williams and Stuart Price in commanding form. (Report by Mathew Bowen, incase Clive complains!)

Llanboidy 10 New Quay Reserves 0

On a dry afternoon, Llan’s first team made light work of a NewQuay team languishing near the bottom of the league with some clinical finishing.

The visitors were struggling before the game with a weakened side and the home side exploited this to the full. After a few early chances were missed, striker Steve Plumb raced through on goal and made no mistake to open the scoring on the 10 minute mark. Right winger Griff Ifan made it two shortly after with a powerful low drive after good work by Striker Luke Davies, Ifan's first goal for 3 years.

Llan were now getting into their rhythm and busy midfielder Dafydd Makepeace stepped up to curl home a glorious free kick into the top corner for 3-0 at the break.

Despite swapping keepers at half time, Newquay could do nothing to stop the flow of goals. The second half belonged to Llan substitute Clive Jones who scored an amazing 5 goals after coming on at half time. The watching crowd were treated to a breathtaking show of deadly finishing from the veteran, who rubbished rumours of impending retirement and a lack of fitness. Plumb again got in on the act on the hour mark with a powerufull effort to score his second, but the loudest cheer of the day was reserved for defender Chrissy Morris who fired into the top corner for his first goal for the first team, followed by his usual camp goal celebration.

A special mention to stand-in goalkeeper Stuart Price who claimed his 3rd clean sheet in only 5 matches.

Llan now go top of the table Aberporth next week in good spirits following this win, with coach Will Davies having a selection dilemma following good performances across the park.
